Background
Ray grew up in Nova Scotia.
Education / Employment History
- 1938-1939 Ray was studying for the Second Class Radiotelegraph Certificate of Proficiency with the intention of becoming a professional radio operator, but this activity was interrupted when war broke out.
- 1940-1945 Royal Canadian Corps of Signals with 5th Canadian Armoured Division in England and Italy.
- 1950 – He graduated from Dalhousie University as a Professional Electrical Engineer
- 1950-1980 - Ray was an engineer with Maritime Telephone and Telegraph Company in Halifax.
- 1980-1986 - During this period, Ray was with the Canadian Telecommunications Carriers Association, then Trans-Canada Telephone System, and then Federal Department of Communications (all in Ottawa).
- 1986 - Ray retired in Ottawa.
Amateur Radio History
- 1946 - He was first licensed in Nova Scotia.
- 1980 - He was assigned the call sign VE3WI when he moved to Ottawa.
Additional Information
Ray was an active amateur on most bands and modes, including the new digital modes.
He was an amateur photographer for over 70 years.
He joined QCWA and Chapter 70 in 1996.
Ray received his “50 Year Licensed” Golden Certificate and lapel pin at the Chapter 70 September 1998 dinner meeting.
He was also a regular attendee at the weekly informal breakfasts.
Ray moved to Saint John, New Brunswick in 1998 and was assigned call sign VE9WI, but remained a member of Chapter 70.
Ray passed away March 26, 2010 in Saint John at age 88 years.
