James (Jim) Jarvis - SK - QCWA# 26282 (Silent Key)
Background
Jim grew up in Hamilton, Ontario
Education / Employment History
- 1940- He graduated from Queen’s University as an Electrical Engineer
- During World War II Jim served with the Royal Canadian Navy. While on an RCN destroyer in the Mediterranean, his ship was strafed by a Luftwaffe Messerschmitt.
By an amazing coincidence, Jim later worked in the same lab with that pilot, Peter Treu, now an electrical engineer in Canada.
- 1946 -1960 Much of Jim’s career was with Northern Electric in Belleville where he worked on several radio and radar projects including: 1 KW SSB Transmitter,
5 KW SSB Transmitter, Airport Surveillance Radar, and other security-classified projects.
- 1960 - Soon after the Research and Development Division of Northern Electric was opened, Jim transferred to Ottawa to work in the Radio Development Section.
Here he worked on microwave power amplifiers and travelling wave tube technology. Jim later became Lab Supervisor for Heavy Route Microwave Development,
and was part of the team developing an all-Canadian solid-state Heavy Route terrestrial microwave system.
- Before retirement, Jim also worked for a brief period at the Canadian Radio Telecommunications Commission.

- Jim was first licensed in 1932 as VE3TI
Additional Information
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Amateur Radio Club.
Jim joined QCWA and Chapter 70 in 1993.
Jim received his “60 Year Licensed” Golden Certificate and lapel pin at the February 1994 dinner meeting and his “70 Year Licensed” Golden Certificate and
lapel pin at the September 2002 dinner meeting.
Jim passed away Dec 20, 2003.
