Background
Education / Employment History
- 1930 – Frank joined Royal Canadian Corps of Signals
- 1932 - 1938 - Radio operator on the North West Territories & Yukon Radio System
- 1939 - 1946 - Overseas during the years of World War II. Served in England, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany.
- 1946 - 1949 - Staff Officer in charge Administration of NWT & Y Radio System with rank of Major.
- 1950 - 1959 - Transferred to RCAF as a Technical Telecommunications Officer, planning Air Division Wing Bases in Europe. Retired from the Forces in 1960 as a
Squadron Leader.
- 1960 - 1963 - Procurement Officer with Department of Defence Production in Ottawa
- 1963 - 1980 - Manager - Government Liaison with Lenkurt Electric Canada in Ottawa
- Frank was a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers.
Amateur Radio History
- Frank’s first exposure to radio was in the early twenties building the “Oatmeal Box Special”, other crystal sets and the advanced one-tube “Peanut Whistler” receiver.
He bemoaned the high cost to his allowance of replacing his old “black market” telephone receiver with a pair of earphones.
- 1934 - First call sign was VE5OA, while at Great Bear Lake on the NWT&Y System.
- 1946 - Post-war call sign assigned was VE3RZ, which he held until his death.
- 1950 - Frank also held VE2AZF on a temporary basis while stationed at RCAF Station St Sylvestre, Quebec
Additional Information
Frank was active on CW and SSB throughout his period in Ottawa.
He joined QCWA just after Chapter 70 was formed and served as Secretary-Treasurer from 1977 to 1979.
Frank passed away April 6, 1993 in his 82nd year.
