Philip (Phil) Robinson - SK - QCWA# 15087 (Silent Key)
Background
Phil was born in New Brunswick, but grew up in Shelburne, NS.
Education / Employment History
- Phil was always interested in radio and built his first crystal set while in school.
- 1939 – Joined Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He was later commissioned and served with 2nd Division HQ Signals Regiment in Northwest Europe.
- 1950 – Returned to active service as a radio instructor at Kingston.
- 1956 – Canadian Broadcasting Corporation CBLT – Worked in television production.
- 1946 until retirement – Phil worked for a number of communications and electronics companies at such locations as Trois Rivieres, QC, Resolution Island, NU, Turkey, Iran, Mill Village, NS, Hall Beach, NU, Resolute Bay, NU, and finally Ottawa, where he retired to the village of Kenmore southeast of the city.
Amateur Radio History
- 1930’s – First licensed in Nova Scotia (callsign unknown).
- 1947 – Licensed as VE3CUR. Obtained VA3PR in the mid-1990s. The call sign VE3CUR was transferred to his wife Marjorie.
Additional Information
After retirement to Kenmore, Phil became known as the Duke of Kenmore. He was active until failing health required a move to a nursing home.
Phil joined QCWA and Chapter 70.
He served as Chapter 70 Secretary-Treasurer for the term 1992/1993 while still as VE3CUR.
Phil became a Silent Key on October 27, 2014 at the age of 97 years, two years after Marjorie’s death.
